The Area
The finca is only 1.2 km from the market town of Aracena, famous for its underground caves and lakes -
the 'Gruta de las Maravillas', its ruined castle, Knights Templar fortifications and Mudejar Tower.
Aracena is a bustling town with a covered market boasting three fish and two meat stalls, fruit, vegetables etc.
This is ham country and there are
excellent butchers supplying the 80 bars and restaurants which do
thriving business throughout the year. There is also a new theatre and several discos for the more adventurous!
There are many major fiestas throughout the year with the most
famous being the Romeria de la Reina de los Angeles on 8th September,
when the town makes its way up to the Peña at Alajar on foot, on
horseback, in carts pulled by mules, oxen and even tractors! It's a
wonderful blend of religion and revelry. Other fiestas include
those held in honour of the 'Jamon' (ham) and 'Seta' (funghi) - any
excuse for a party!
Aracena is an easy drive from Seville (50 mins) and Merida (1 3/4 hrs) with their
fascinating Moorish and Roman buildings, and comprehensive shopping. The Costa de
la Luz is a 1 1/2 hours trip, past dramatic scenery including the Rio Tinto mines.
It is worth the journey for the vast open beaches and chirringuitos (beach restaurants).
